Dear Lynnae 10 years ago…….

A friend put up a nice little comment on facebook today that really got me thinking. It was this….

“If you could go back ten years ago and tell yourself some things, what would you say?”

Dear Me…….. The day is coming up with the truck on the freeway and the skidding and the guardrail…..And even though you’ll walk away and be very thankful, still be able to function and look normal to everyone, and despite several rounds of physical therapy, your neck will basically be painfully nagging you for the rest of your life. Please take the back road that day.

And Dear Me……check into some custom shoe  inserts now before those foot problems set in. Once the kids are in school you will have more time to exercise, and guess what? You ARE going to lose weight and be active despite your setbacks, but it takes a toll on your feet, so let’s try to avoid the shots, braces, casts, and pain, OK?

Love every moment with Jon and especially the girls, they grow up so fast. But you already know that. There will be challenges, but trust me, come 2010 you wouldn’t go back for the world.

Just thinking about what it would be like to not have a sore neck and not have a sore foot brought me to tears. Think of what I could have done then……….

But on the other hand, I’ve been led on a path, and learned so much about myself, maybe my successes were because of those challenges, not in spite of them. And ten years ago if you would have told my I would lose that weight- I would have been jumping for joy.

I think I’ll jump for joy today!

OK, so what would YOU tell yourself if you could go back ten years? You sat through my rant, now lets hear yours.

On Into May

The arrival of May for me has been like waking up from a fog. Here is a brief sampling of what I’ve been up to.

IMG_1844 I bought fabric for a Jane Austen dress for the AGM in Portland. My Mom is going too and it is going to be FUN! One fun fact about this cloth….I had the same fabric in an empire waist long dress I had when I was a kid. My mom made all the girls matching dresses for Christmas one year. I wonder if any of those dresses are still kicking around? They would be great for a little niece to wear to my next Austen party!

My second Daughter is overcoming her health problems. As I write she’s taking an AP History test (You go girl!) And a month ago I was wondering how she would even make it to graduation. I am so grateful to the Lord for her recovery. Here is a sneak peak at her prom dress.prom 2010

My oldest Daughter brought her boyfriend up to our place to visit Washington and meet us over spring break. We liked him, I hope he liked us, and I think we had a lot of fun and ate a lot of sushi.IMG_1809IMG_1808

I am exercising again. To say my foot is better is not accurate really, but I couldn’t take it any longer. Besides, gaining back weight I fought so hard to lose is not going to help the foot either. But that’s another story.

I’m trying to get ready for the ‘Where Bloggers Create’ party I mentioned in the last post. Since writing that I acquired the summer issue of ‘Where Women Create’. <SIGH> It’s so beautiful. I have already been through the ‘first perusal’, and the ‘reading-every-word-cover-to-cover’, now I will go through and dog-ear the pages that I really REALLY love….

As for my studio space, There’s a few things I need to finish up, but with the blog party being days after daughter’s graduation, I have to be realistic about what I can get done. I am committed to participating though, ready or not!

I’m Dreaming of a White Table……

…Or, How to turn my frown upside-down.

Today started off pretty crummy. Regular readers know that I had Dry Needling and a Cortizone shot a while back in an attempt to help my plantar fasciitis and was told I would not be able to jog or do aerobics for eight weeks. Now I am in week TEN and my foot still hurts. So either it’s healing very slowly or it didn’t work.

You may not know that over the past few years I’ve lost 100 lbs. It’s not something I’ve shared with the blog, though it’s one of my greatest accomplishments. That’s a story for another day. But I just have to emphasize how important exercise is to me. I have returned to Jazzercise, and do a ‘hardly moving’ low impact workout, but today in class it was all I could do to not start bawling. Seriously, loud music pumping and everyone’s happy and I’m blinking away because I’m so frustrated with this darn foot.

I wish I’d never had the stupid shot!

So, my foot is pretty good if I sit around all day, but what mom can do that? Plus, thanks to an old car accident, sitting too long makes my neck and back hurt. So these days I feel like it’s a choice between my neck or my foot.

I will stop whining now. I know many people are worse off than me, so I’m trying to get a grip and just be thankful for what I have. In an effort to ‘flip this day’ (you know, like flipping a yucky house into a nice one?) I decided to paint a table I got at Goodwill a while back. The table cost me $19.99.

I added little wooden embellishments on either side at the base, primed it and painted it white with old paint we had around.

IMG_0831 I LOVE IT!

It still needs another coat but I was anxious to show it off.

So now I feel a little better. Plus crawling around to paint it I was neither on my foot or sitting all day.

My kids went to see holiday lights and Jon isn’t home from work yet. Thanks for allowing me to be vent some frustration, and yeah, maybe whine a little.

It’s cocoa time.

Three Things Very Dull Indeed?

Last Saturday I ran 5k at the Fall City Days celebration. I got my second best time, at 35:14. I know for runners it’s not super fast, but for me it’s great. I want to work up to a 10k this summer, so I was looking at local races and found the website for Railroad Days in Snoqualmie. This is a fun celebration anyway, but look at the cute race shirt logo!

I may be shallow, but if I’m gonna run it’s all about the shirt. It’s like when I used to get ribbons on the swim team. I usually come home from a race , shower, and put on my new race shirt and sweats for lounging around or napping with a sense of superiority accomplishment.

In more local news, my little town of North Bend is 100 years old and having a fun block party on Main Street this weekend. And then later this summer is The Festival at Mount Si. We have a parade, booths, and music and food. But this year they are adding something new. It’s something I have wanted to blog about but I’ve been afraid…..

image

They want to add an art element to the festival, since this is a pretty artsy place for a small town, so they want to have a live art exhibit. I have been so excited to try this and scared at the same time, that I didn’t want to mention it on the blog because I know everyone will be encouraging but I don’t want to commit myself because it’s scary. The plan is to have live models posing in costume and then people around sketching and painting. Look at the cool concept drawings!

image

But do I want to commit to that? Do I have the experience (no) to sit in front of people and paint? What if there’s not enough time for me to do anything, or what if my art is no good and people are around me staring! Eeek. So I’m laying out my doubts and fears before you now.

….And another thing. I am rapidly approaching my 100th post, and my Birthday, July 11th, which, for those of you who haven’t followed for long, I have also given to Fanny Price of Mansfield Park to be her honorary birthday. We know her birthday is sometime in July, plus I love Miss Price, and it fits astrologically, even though I don’t believe in that. So I am trying to prepare something for a birthday/100th post giveaway. Stay tuned.

Three things very dull indeed? You tell me!

In Which I Take a Spill

Yesterday a friend came over to go on a jog with me. I have never really ran with non family before, and it was fun until, near the end, I was distracted and totally bit the pavement on account of some uneven sidewalk, which I hate almost as much as flourescent lightbulbs.

I injured my left knee, hand, and shoulder, and to my suprise this morning I felt like I'd been punched in the neck. All this to guard my face... since thats how I make my living. (TeeHee..really it was my dad's constant warning- "You'll knock your teeth out!" which had me doing the stunt girl shoulder maneuver). But why, WHY, when I have a friend here? God loves to keep me humble.

And speaking of not being humble, the secret X-Box project my hubby was working on was unveiled yesterday. Read about it on his blog here. He would make comments but say he couldn't tell me, then I'd act like I didn't care and that would drive him nuts. That's just the sort of loving relationship we have.

Splintered

Lately the central focus of my life has been taking my oldest daughter off to college. We drove across several states, stayed in my parents house, and were inundated with activities for parents of Freshmen, though it was nothing compared to her freshman orientation activities. We spent a record six hours shopping in three different Wal-Marts, and still had to hit a Target after that, for food and dorm supplies, averaging almost a hundred dollars an hour. But what is money compared to the feelings… the feeling of leaving her that first night, to stay in her dorm, and hugging her briefly in the morning 5 days later as we left for the road trip back home without her.
Every time we drove away from campus scenes from her early childhood flashed across my mind. I see snippets of pictures and home movies and hazy images of pale wispy hair swirling in sunbeams. Oh, that’s when it’s really tough.
There were also many great moments of having that “You know, she’s going to do all right!” feeling. And special moments that would confirm to me that she was on the right course. Who can argue with something like that?
When I was in college, a ‘couple’ of years ago, I phoned my parents less than once a month. It cost a fortune. I had to wait in line for the pay phone, and then, because it was cheaper for them to place the call, I would call the operator, place a person to person call for someone who wouldn’t be at the house, and my folks would deny the call. This was our code, then I would wait for them to call me back. Our main communication was letters. Saying this now makes it seem like it was 50 or a hundred years ago. But really, so much has changed.
After the first few days I told my daughter she didn’t have to call me every day. We have e-mailed each other and made comments on each other’s facebook, But yesterday I was dying to hear he voice and she called last night. She told my husband “Well, Mom said not to call every day.” So I told her she could call as much as she wanted. I didn’t want to burden her or make her feel she had to “check in”, but it’s hard to find that comfortable routine still.
As for the rest of my life……
My main problem now is that I want to be more structured, and I want to be more creative. Let me explain and we’ll see if the two can’t go hand in hand.
Our home routines have all but disappeared over the summer, and I start to feel like my house, and my brain, is falling apart. I have learned that I can’t be creative when I’m stressed out, and that my spirit craves a certain level of organization. So since school has been in I make an effort to get through my daily routines, checking things off as I do them. I’m contemplating projects, but I actually bought on of those books that is supposed to help you flex your creativity, and maybe I’ll go in to that more next time. I have plenty of ideas, but need some fresh ways of thinking.
I have a new project in mind. I’m going to flip a house. Well, actually I didn’t buy a house, and I’m not going to sell it when I’m done. The house in mind is a two-story six room circa 1975 dollhouse that my father made for me. It was white with a slanty roof and columned porch. Very simple, basic design. On ‘Special Days’ I spent with my mom we would glue in flooring or use wrapping paper as wallpaper. I would save my money for miniature furniture that fit the six inch ‘dawn dolls’ that we played with. My sister had an identical house, and later a younger sister got her own dollhouse with a similar design. Often we would slide them all together to make one giant house. Many happy hours of my childhood were spent cross legged in front of that house. I played and decorated often, even long after I would have felt comfortable letting my friends know I still played with dolls.
When I got married my hubby convinced me to leave it home, and I really didn’t want to drag it all around the world with me. So I told my mom to just let my younger siblings have it. At some point I came home to see that a sister had taken it and redecorated the rooms and added shingles and shutters. I think it spent some time at her house before being brought back to Mom and Dad’s.
Last spring my mom asked if I wanted it again. This time I most certainly did, but I couldn’t take it back with me on the plane, and it would be a fortune to ship it. So I put a note on it where it was stored. “My dollhouse, do not remove. I will get it soon.”
After unloading the van of my college daughter’s belongings, I had room to take the dollhouse back home with us. My hubby still didn’t want it around, but after 20 years of marriage…. The house was coming home with us. I mentioned to my mom that I had room for it, and she casually said “I haven’t seen it around, I think the guys might have tossed it.”
I acted calm, but the moment I had a break in the conversation I casually turned down the stairs, then ran to where the dollhouse was, still sitting with the note the way I had left it. Whew!
So now the house is here and I’m planning to fix it up with a bit of Regency- Jane Austen Flair. The outside is to be based on Longbourne from the BBC A&E P&P. The two top rooms will be Fanny’s little white attic and the East room from Mansfield Park (greatly simplified of course). The downstairs will have some sort of parlor and dining room set up. (Small summer breakfast room maybe?) The other two will be bedrooms but I haven’t yet decided what to theme them after. The bedroom with the imposing chest from Northanger Abbey? Or maybe Jane’s own room from Chawton Cottage. One thing you can be sure of is that at my pace I have plenty of time to decide.
My last topic has to do with journaling. And blogging. And keeping a food journal, a workout log, sketchbooks, and scrapbooks. Every time I feel like I’m doing poorly at one it is because I have been focusing on another. I’ve got to ‘get it together’ as they say. My sisters and their Sister’s Running Club (SRC) inspired me when I was at home, to keep a workout log. I went and looked at running logs at the book store today, but I ended up not getting one. I already keep a food journal because of weight watchers, and I use the 12 week planner. But it occurred to me that each week there are a few note pages I don’t use, so I can make my own work out log on the computer and then just glue them in there when I get a new book. I’ve been sidelined with Plantar Fasciitis for a few weeks, and now I’m working out again and super excited. So I can combine the food and workout books. Then I decided that I would print out these blog entries and tape them into their appropriate spot in my written journal. My DH would be rolling his eyes right now. But I’m a bit of an old fashioned girl and worry about computer backups, even though he has an awesome back up system. I just feel like I want it together. Hey, I may even staple in pages from my sketchbook. I just feel like none of these reflections of me on their own reflect the whole me. Does that make any sense? That is why I’m ‘splintered’ and that is my solution.
I’ll keep you posted!
