Blessings For Grandma

Grandma

My dear grandma who I’ve written about many times has been very sick and in the hospital. I’m in another state and have been relying on the updates from Mom and siblings.

Here is my sister’s sweet post about what happened one evening to help Grandma feel better:

Better Than We Deserve

Please wander over and check it out.

Grandma’s Memory Book

Grandma's memory book 1 I wanted to put up some pictures of my finished Memory Book that I made for my Grandma (I’ve blurred out her full name for privacy reasons). I’m really happy about how it turned out and I think its one of the best gifts I’ve ever given. I gave it to her when I was in Utah in September (I couldn’t wait till December), and I hear that she loves to show it to her visitors. That is exactly what I wanted, an easy way she could show pictures to friends and little great grandchildren without having do dig out boxes or precious originals.

Linnea's Book Last summer we visited Grandma and scanned over 100 pictures. Not only do we now have a digital copy to preserve, but I was able to print some off on photo paper and make an album. I wanted it to be an old style paper album so I used a black sketchbook with a metal ring binding. I didn’t want any plastic over the pictures, and they were copies, so I thought that would be OK. I am so glad I did it that way too, because as soon as she opened it up she touched the pictures with her hands and just said “Oh!”

I used a few Graphic pieces from The Graphics Fairy’s excellent collection, to balance out the pages. I also left a few empty spots for new pictures we may want to add. There’s a lot of photographs we didn’t get to at her house.

I try to call my Grandma once a week, to ask her about the past and record the conversation onto the computer. If you’d like to read more of what I’ve written about this project, choose ‘Linnea’ from the labels on my sidebar.

I had to clear out some of the Rockband instruments and other game things for this picture, but I still see a few I missed. Grandma made the candles on the top shelf, along with the stockings and nativity. In the 50’s she began making stockings for all her children, their spouses, grandchildren, spouses, and so on. She has made dozens, if not a hundred.

I can never stick with the same color scheme from room to room.  My breakfast nook is light and bright and cheerful.
Many more Christmas decorations were made by my Grandma. She would work all year on ceramics for her grandchildren. And she has a LOT of grandchildren!

Just Add Water

I dream of having a swimming pool. I can't help it, it's a part of my heritage. That's my new line anyway. All these years I thought I just loved swimming.

Project58

This is my dad, floating peacefully in Grandma’s pool, before I was born.

pool birthday

Me (on left) with two of my sisters, at my 9 year old birthday party by Grandma’s pool.

Maybe it was my summer birthday parties at Grandma's pool, or the way Grandpa Brink would toss coins in the pool when all the cousins were together.

Imagine sitting on the hot cement beside the pool, hearing the water sizzle, shading your eyes from the sun as Grandpa Brink pours a fist full of coins from a large pill bottle and swings his arm back... For a brief moment the sky is filled with glittering, twirling coins, then with a plip-plip they all slip into the blue, and so do I, so do my brothers and sisters, reaching around in the silence of the underwater for the treasure....

One thing I've learned from my grandma is that as a girl swimming was THE favorite family activity. She lived in Salt Lake City, and it seems that back in the 20’s there were pools everywhere. It was common to go to one of the local pools with the cousins.

On special days they would go the Lagoon amusement park . There were rides there, but also a huge pool, and once you left the pool area you couldn’t go back in, so they would swim and swim until they were exhausted and starving, and then get out, eat, and head for the rollercoaster.

On Independence Day they would head south to either Saratoga, in Lehi, or the Geneva pool. Grandma remembers her dad driving them down to the point of the mountain, where he would flip a coin to decide if they went to Saratoga or Geneva. They would also go to Saratoga Hot Springs with the Swedish community for a Midsummer party.

So how could I not love a shimmering, turquoise, outdoor pool? And this week after mowing the back yard my husband said “well, maybe it’s worth $30,000. to have less lawn to mow.

It seems like he’s caving in…quick, can anyone lend me $30,000?

Photo Joy!

On my recent trip Jon and I visited my Grandmother and through the blessing of modern technology (and a patient husband) scanned over a hundred photographs of her, her parents, even her grandparents. We sat for four hours sorting through pictures, numbering and scanning.
It was fun to match some pictures with the stories Grandma tells me every Tuesday when I call.

When Grandma was a girl they spoke only Swedish. They lived in Salt Lake City and her father had a gas station. She remembers playing at his rolltop desk.
Her mother was a seamstress and worked every day. Here she has brought a sewing machine outside. This is grandma on 'Crazy Day' in High School.Me: Grandma, you were quite the hottie!
Grandma: I don't like how you said 'WERE'...

Hands off the High Tech

Yesterday was my weekly call to grandma, asking her questions about her life and childhood. She told me a wealth of great stories during our talk.
This story is about their radio. My grandma as a girl in the 1920's was only allowed in the front room if she was dusting the bottoms of the furniture. Her father's radio was in that room and no one was allowed to touch it. He had it all set up to recieve his news channel when he came home from work. Her mother wouldn't tune the radio or use it, and her impression was that her mom was frustrated by the technology and couldn't work it.
Some things must run in the family. When I am faced with a computer issue that makes me so mad, I will think now of my great grandma standing in front of that staticky polished box in the front room.
