For Henry Tilney Fangirls

The Jane Austen Society AGM opened with a fun, lively panel discussion by ‘Team Tilney’ and the special guest was Henry Tilney himself, played by Joe Homes. He started with a Henry Tilney style parody of the Old Spice commercial. By the time I frantically grabbed my camera I could only catch the ending, but here is the text written by Heather Lawrence:

Hello ladies. Look at your Mister Darcy. Now back to me. Now look at Captain Wentworth. Now back to me. Sadly, those gentlemen are not me. But if they knew enough about muslin to buy their own cravats and were more nice than wise, they could be like me.

Look down. Back up. Where are you? You’re in the Lower Rooms with the gentleman your gentleman could be like. I’m asking you to dance. Unlike some gentlemen who refuse to dance, I love to dance, and you are handsome enough to tempt me.

What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it. I’m reading that novel you love. I’m reading it to my sister.

Anything is possible when your gentleman is Henry Tilney.

I have a puppy. (Arf!)

[whistle Old Spice theme]

All the details on the creation of this delightful event can be found on this post on Austenblog. Maggie Sullivan conceived of the event, and she and her fellow ‘Team Tilney’ fangirls did an excellent job!

Here are a few more selections……..

I hope you enjoy these. Please read the link on Austenblog where you can learn all about the talented creators of this fun event.

  1. THANK YOU!!! I'm so excited to see these. I don't know why we didn't think of making video of it...maybe because we were so concerned with just pulling it off. :-)

  2. You're welcome. I'm glad I thought to film it. And you all did wonderfully!

  3. Adding my exuberant Thank You!! So fun to see these again. Kicking myself that we didn't bring a camera to record it, but so glad that you did!

  4. Yes a big thank you from me as well!!!! I was bummed we didn't think to record this so am glad that someone was able to get some highlights! Thank you for sharing :)

  5. Love the videos - even if they make me even more sad that I missed the original event!

  6. Such fun, what a Henry! And congrats to our Team Tilney ladies for making it happen. :)
And thank goodness someone thought to record the way, love your Little White Attic- shows what people can do with places.

Thanks for posting the Tilney links; Mandy N.

  7. Mandy, do you mean the Little White Attic my blog? Or the lovely space you see me in on my header? Because as much as i wish that were MY space, I have 'photoshopped' myself into one of the Thorne Miniature Rooms. SHHhhhhhh, don't tell anyone.

  8. Well done Team Tilney, and the lovely and talented camerawoman Lynnae.

  9. Apologies if this is too stalker-ish, but: you're a Jane Austen fan, you're LDS, and you live in Washington?! I'm in the Sea. North Stake!

  10. Well, I like what your've done with your living room, but I have strolled through some of your archives and put you in my Faves; so I guess that means LWA, your blog too !

And I am as silent as the grave. ;-)

  11. Heather L..That's great. We'll have to get together sometime for some green Jello and funeral potatoes ;)

  12. Lynnae! Thanks for the videos! I'm going to publish it at JASBRA!

    Greetings from Brazil,

  13. I love anyone who uses the new Old Spice format. How great is that? Looks so fun.

  14. I was so sorry that there was absolutely no chance I could have attended this event (I'm in Scotland!), but seeing these clips has helped so much. Well done to Team Tilney! It looks as if it's been absolutely perfectly organised and executed and 'Henry' looks and sounds just right! I'll picture him when I re-read NA...
